Last year, we shared with you the distressing story of Monica; a patient in Elmina who almost lost her life when she went into labor because the only health center serving her community did not have enough beds to accommodate her. She was turned away to have her baby at home but ended up in the hospital with life-threatening complications after delivery. Monica’s story created a movement within GWAG to better the maternity experience for women in Ghana. We reached out to our community of supporters for help, and together we raised approximately $40,000 for the project. Part of the funds was used to furnish three facilities: Elmina, Oda and Yendi hospitals. The maternity wards at these hospitals have been greatly transformed, and now have the basic tools necessary to provide decent care for expectant mothers like Monica.

Yet, even with all that progress made, a lot of work still remains. We believe that to make an impact in this area of healthcare, sustainability is crucial. So our goal this year is to improve on what we have started by providing additional supplies to Elmina and Oda, in addition to furnishing three new hospitals we have identified in the Volta Region. We want to help reduce preventable maternal deaths and make sure that women like Monica and their unborn children have access to quality care.

We hope you can attend this year's event and look forward to working together with you again to achieve our goals.
